Description
You've probably felt the same way, wanting somehow to bring back someone from the dead that you cared about. It was my fault he died, and I can't bear to see Suji so heartbroken. Maybe I could try. I am a scientist right? It's worth a shot, but I have to keep it a secret. :: Dr Landon Kobalt :: (They are not humans they are furry aliens/creatures I call Waivins. Chapter One
"Should I close the hangar door?" He asked, pushing the new light gray jet past the lowered door and into the darkness onto the other side. He did it effortlessely, the jet being light weight.
"No I can get to that, you can go home now" I nodded, sliding my finger across the computer pad and typing something in the virtual blueprints. I noted a possible extra support on the gears that lifted the jet's wings.
"Really?! But it's still early?" He came back out of the shadows and looked up at me in dis-belief.
I nodded and plugged the computer pad into the main screen. It illuminated with the blueprints immediately and I zoomed in on one of the jet's wings. He zipped past me and over towards the elevator door. It opened as he came close and he halted, jumping back a litte. He quickly took off the white scarf around his neck, that symbolized his career, and hung it up. "Almost forgot!" he jumped into the elevator. "Cya tomorrow Dr.Kobalt!" he said cheerily as the doord closed.
I smiled to myself as I turned the virtual jet upside down to check the mechanisms underneath. "See you tomorrow" I said quietly and zoomed in on the gears. Using my finger I sketched some added supports to the booster that lifted the wings out for gliding. After a few more calculations I went over to the jet still out on the center of the platform. Sat down on the automotive creeper and picked up a couple metal rods and a small piston. I slid under it and started working.
After a few hours at the one wing, I got up and noted what I'd modifed on the blueprint before going to work on the other side. I checked my watch after a while.
11:48pm
I hurried the process, quickly slipping the piston in and connecting the rod with the opened wing. I'd have to test it tomorrow before the first flight. I made a mental note to look for a new pilot because the last one quit to join the officer force. I heard the elevator beep and the doors open.
Who's out this late? I thought
"Henrik?" I called.
"Nope!" a cheery female voice said and footsteps came around the jet towards me. "I thought you were a scientist, not a mechanic" she leaned down to look a me.
"Hey Suji, why're you here?" I asked, sliding out from under the jet.
"Was just passing by after my date" she shrugged and stood up again.
"With Reems?" I asked.
"Yeah" she said and stood back to look the jet over. "Cool! Is this the new model of the Gyh6?"
"No it's a new jet called the Agi9, built to be much faster" I replied. "And can you ask Reems to come here tomorrow morning?"
"Sure" she nodded and walked around to the other side. "So who created the design?"
"I did actually"
"Of course" she smiled at me and I could tell she was stiffling a yawn. "I should go, don't stay too late"
"I was actually about to leave now" I said, hanging up my coat and following her into the elevator.
At the top we said our goodbyes as I headed towards my house. I looked up at the night sky, more 'moons' shining than stars. They weren't actual moons, just asteroids in the planet's belt, like the one our city was built on. Some nights you could see the planet's grayish-red surface. It was called Undred, an almost completely deserted planet.
I say almost, because there have been rare sightings of our own kind still survivng there. We nicknamed them the 'Tribesmen' but none of us have met them personally. They all have ginger fur and are much taller than us. I'm not sure whether or not they really do exist, since I've never left the city in my life, but it's highly likely for waivins to survive there. Maybe Reems would see some on the test flight. He was a pilot after all and he'd definety be thrilled to try out a new jet. Sometimes I wonder why I didn't hire him sooner.
I opened my front door and turned on the lights. It was now 12:13am and everyone was asleep. But nights like this I never slept. I immediately went into the basement where I kept my own little lab space. The Agi9 wasn't the only project I was working on. There was supposed to be a meeting next month about a better water purification system. It was pretty boring but the Agi9 was done and I had free time.
-
I groaned as I lifted my head off of the desk. All around me were parts for the new filter, mostly finished but still had to be brought to the lab and assembled. It could wait till tomorrow. I slowly got up and went back into the house. I brushed my hair a little with my fingers as I went into the kitchen. I normally didn't drink coffee but a little caffeine wouldn't hurt.
I sat there for a while with a small cup of coffee, still feeling incredibly tired. It was still only 5am but I didn't plan going back to sleep.
Wonder of Suji got Reems to come to the lab, I thought as I finished off the cup.
I looked around my house boredly and decided to go to work early and putting together the filter. I went back down to the basement and collected the parts and pipes for the filter into a large box. Holding the box up on my shoulder I locked the door behind me and started walking the lab. The 'moons' were starting for fade out in the rising sun, since they never really went down. The sun's rays were just peeking around Undred and lighting up the eastern half of the city.
The large white lab loomed up over the other buildings and I noticed the lights outside the front door were on. This made me hurry up the steps and to the door. I peeked inside the tiny window in the door and saw the lights inside on. I put the box down and pressed my paw to the white iron. The area around my paw glowed orange for a moment before changing to a light green. The doors slid open and I carried the box inside.
Henrik was sitting at the large table that ran across the wall. This wasn't the actual lab, mostly for visitors and sometimes meetings. It had a wall full of books and computer pads and the long table. There were a few old experiments on display, like a small jet and a statue of a waivin's anatomy. I walked over to Henrik and lifted the parts onto the table.
He wasn't wearing his coat as usual. He has light brown fur with white patches. He was Ederet's older cousin, and they looked very much alike other than Ederet's light greyish-green fur.
"And 'ere I though' you'd be 'ere all night" he commented and took off his red scan glasses. He had a glass plate on the table with some slides in it.
"Finished the jet so I went home" I sat down beside him.
"Your pilot's downstairs"
"Reems? Already?"
He nodded. "I set the test flight course for you on your computer pad, I need some samples from Undred's surface" He said and went back to looking over the glass slides.
I left the filter parts on the table and went over to the elevator. The doors opened with a beep and I pulled my coat on.
Reems was standing beside the Agi9, looking it over with interest. He had light blue fur with black hair. He wore a grey and light green collar and shoulder strap to show he was a pilot.
"Impressive" He said when he heard me walk over to my computer pad to check the test flight course.
"You've really outdone yourself" He turned back to me.
"Thanks" I glanced up at him for a second, more interested in the flight path. Just the length of it made me nervous. Three hours each way, to and from Undred's surface. Henrik had deleted my course, just a quick flight around the city, maybe land on a few of the 'moons' but nothing close to this. It was too risky.
Reems was standing beside me now, looking at the course plans. It was apparent he was looking forward to going to Undred even without saying anything.
"Anyway, it has the same controls as the Gyh6 so it should be no problem. The trigger to bring out the gliding wings is on the front of the handles." I explained to him.
"How fast is it?" He seemed uninterested in the rest.
"Top speed is 880km per hour."
"Nice!" He immediately went over to the jet and touched the door. It glowed green and opened.
"We should probably wait for my apprentice" I suggested, still a little worried about the course change.
He nodded and leaned back against the jet. "Can't wait to get my own apprentice. But none of the kids want to be pilots these days"
"Doubt it. Your job is cooler than mine" I said as I plugged the computer pad into the screen and paged Ederet.
"You can't say that, you've invented half the stuff in our city. I'm surprised the guy who built this place wasn't your grandfather" He said.
I was about to reply when he went into the jet and sat down in the pilot's seat. He pulled the controls down from their overhead locking position and turned it on. It started humming and the front lights came on.
"You know what?" He looked back at me through the window.
"What?" I asked
"You should come to. Fire up another jet" he said.
I hesitated. "I'm not a certified pilot" I made an excuse.
"You can drive this better than me, you invented it" He pressured.
"We need someone to stay back here to..." I was cut off by the beep of the elevator and a cheery voice saying...
"Sorry I'm late!" Ederet called and ran over.
"No, you're not late" I said, trying to hide the nervousness. "I'll be doing the test flight with Reemeson, you think you can handle things back here for a few hours?" I asked.
"Sure" he nodded. I pressed the button to open up the hangar door. The large grey door slowly opened and I ducked into the darkness inside. I felt around for the back of the second jet and started to push it back to the main area.
Ederet had already opened the main door, sending a large wind into the lab. Reems was inching his jet back to get a good runway length. I pushed my jet over beside his and went inside. I started the engine and tested the folding wings a little, controlling them to go horizontally to just barely touching the floor.
"Ready?" Reems asked through the speaker above my head.
"As I'll ever be" I muttered and his jet zoomed off towards the open gate. I hesitated before pushing the controls forward to go. The jet inches a little before zooming off. The jet shook like crazy and I almost thought it was going to fall apart. Not paying attention I almost drove strait out the door. I pulled the controls up and back and the nose of the jet tilted up. I felt the wheels bump off the platform and find air.
I shot strait out into the middle of space, about a mile away from the city I less than a minute. I pushed the controls down a little to slow down and pulled the trigger to put the wings down. It lurched slightly towards Undred before righting a sort of gliding around the side of the city.
Reems's jet was a few miles away, flying upside-down towards Undred's surface. I turned the controls and started off at half speed to follow him.
